Systematic Literature Review Of Heutagogical Learning Strategy At Institutions Of Higher Education
Abstract
Heutagogy enhances students’ learning by promoting autonomy, adaptability, and lifelong learning. Although research in Science and Technology has grown, but systematic studies on heutagogical approaches in the Social sciences remain limited. This study conducts a systematic literature review (SLR) on the use of heutagogy as a learning strategy in higher education. Using a qualitative content analysis guided by the PRISMA framework, the review followed five stages: formulating research questions, conducting systematic searches (Scopus, ScienceDirect, ERIC), screening and eligibility checks, quality appraisal and thematic data extraction. A total of 31 articles published between 2017 and 2021 were analyzed, generating four key themes: (1) implementation of heutagogical principles, (2) heutagogy-based learning activities, (3) flexible and technology-supported learning environments, and (4) holistic approaches to teaching and learning. These themes show how heutagogy is gradually transforming higher education through learner-centred practices, meaningful engagement and digital integration that support personalized and immersive learning experiences. The findings highlight current research trends and the growing potential of heutagogical strategies to meet evolving educational needs. This review not only contributes to theoretical development but also emphasizes the importance of embedding heutagogy into curricula and institutional practices, particularly in the social sciences, to expand access, enhance quality, and strengthen lifelong learning. The study offers conceptual clarity and practical guidance for future research and implementation in higher education.
