Technology Acceptance Model And Practice Of Massive Open Online Courses (Moocs): The Digital Technology Perspective

Abstract

In today’s globalized world, online learning has emerged as a vital approach to teaching and learning, particularly in higher education institutions. Among the most widely used online learning platforms are MOOCs, which provide a channel for e-learning, especially in the context of distance education, by offering open educational resources accessible worldwide. In Malaysia, most institutions implement MOOCs through blended learning approaches. The technology adoption framework, developed by Fred Davis (1986), serves to explain and predict how users embrace and utilize new technologies. Accordingly, this study aims to investigate the acceptance of MOOCs technology among public university students, with a particular focus on higher learning institutions. The study population comprised individuals who had participated in MOOCs at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). A quantitative survey approach was adopted, utilizing a structured questionnaire, with 400 participants recruited. Purposive sampling was employed to specifically target individuals who met the inclusion criteria of having completed or actively participated in at least one MOOC. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS for descriptive statistics and PLS-SEM for inferential analysis. This study extends the technology adoption theory by incorporating additional variables. The findings indicate that overall acceptance and engagement with MOOCs technology at the university are substantial. Furthermore, the results provide valuable insights into the acceptance and use of MOOCs in teaching and learning and offer practical implications for key stakeholders, including lecturers, students, and course designers.
