The Role Of Women On Development Performance In Indonesia
Abstract
The fifth Sustainable Development Goal places gender at the heart of its agenda, emphasizing the advancement of women and the establishment of genuine equality between the sexes. This policy has been translated into national policies and various government regulations. There are lots of efforts that have been made to reduce the gender gap. Indonesia's Human Development Index (HDI) shows that women's progress still lags behind that of men in various aspects, such as health, economy and education. Indonesia's Gender Inequality Index (GII) in 2023 has experienced a significant decrease to 0.447. This has shown a steady improvement in gender equality. However, the gap still needs to be addressed. This research seeks to determine the magnitude of women’s engagement in determining outcomes within both economic and political arenas, and whether such engagement contributes to improved development indicators, particularly Human Development Index (HDI) for women in Indonesia. This study employs a multiple linear regression model to analyze data from 34 provinces in Indonesia over the 2019–2023 period. The study incorporates women’s parliamentary involvement, professional participation, managerial representation, educational attainment, and gender indices (GEI and GDI) to assess gender equality outcomes. Empirical findings reveal that women’s contributory earnings, accumulated years of formal education, gender empowerment, and gender-responsive development indicators collectively exert a positive and statistically significant influence on women’s development outcomes. In contrast, the remaining variables do not demonstrate a statistically significant effect on women’s development performance.
