Abstract
The rate of reaction is a fundamental concept in chemistry that describes how quickly reactants are transformed into products in a chemical reaction. This chapter explores the factors influencing reaction rates, including temperature, concentration, surface area, and catalysts. The study investigates students’ perceptions of reaction rates, focusing on how their understanding relates to the use of scientific terminologies and analogies during learning. Conducted with a group of high school students, the research identifies common misconceptions, challenges in using appropriate terms, and the effectiveness of analogies in simplifying abstract ideas. The study employed descriptive analysis and frequency comparison to achieve its objectives, using frequency distribution as the main statistical method. It examined how well students understood analogies and how these tools supported their learning of reaction rate concepts. Findings reveal that real-life examples and analogies are effective teaching methods, helping students grasp otherwise difficult concepts. However, the needs analysis also indicates that while students find analogies helpful in understanding terminology and processes, they may still require more engaging and innovative instructional techniques to develop deeper conceptual understanding. Overall, the study contributes to existing knowledge by offering insights into students’ conceptualisation of reaction rates and the challenges they face. The results highlight the importance of curriculum development that incorporates creative teaching strategies to enhance students’ comprehension of reaction rates and related chemical concepts.
