Abstract
Emojis refer to a set of icons or symbols which are available on social media that enable people to express emotions visually. They were designed to support communication in written digital text for digital conversation. Emojis have become the replacement for body language which is absent in digital conversations on social media. As social media becomes a prominent part of modern communication, emojis are considered as one of the components of that evolution. However, emojis cannot yet be considered a full language. The inadequacy of vocabulary, as well as grammar and syntax, prevent emojis from conveying complex feelings and ideas. Furthermore, it can cause misinterpretation due to the barriers of personal assumptions towards each emoji, which could further hinder the communication process. Emojis offer numerous alternative approaches to incorporate the authentic real-life experiences into the digital conversations. However, it also presents challenges, such as miscommunication and ambiguity. This study aims to understand the factors that influence the use of emojis in terms of expressing non-verbal gestures and the differences between men and women. In addition, the researcher has narrowed down the amount for sampling which the exact number for the respondents of this research study will be 320 respondents. To achieve this, the study utilizes the Users and Gratifications Theory (UGT) to provide a solid framework for examining the factors involved. This paper concluded that emojis help in clarifying the context of the message which can prevent miscommunication between the sender and receiver, plus the factors of selecting a specific emoji does not decide by the gender.
