Approaches To Teaching Programming In The Era Of Artificial Intelligence

Abstract

Computer programming is a core competency for computer science students and is essential for preparing future software engineers. With the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI), programming education requires instructional approaches that reflect current technological practices. This paper proposes three instructional approaches—Programming by Practice, Programming by Integration, and Programming by AI—to strengthen programming competencies in the AI era. A Scopus-based systematic literature review guided by PRISMA 2020 was conducted to identify recent trends in programming education. The review findings were synthesised with a framework development process to produce an expert-informed and conceptually refined instructional framework. The study identifies six key programming competencies and maps them to the three proposed approaches. Programming by Practice builds foundational coding skills through structured hands-on activities. Programming by Integration familiarises students with real-world tools and libraries. Programming by AI supports debugging, explanation, and reasoning through intelligent tools. Collectively, these components offer a structured and adaptable strategy for enhancing programming instruction and preparing students for modern software development and AI-driven environments.
