Developing A Green Education Model For Sustainable Teaching And Learning

Abstract

Sustainability is an important goal for higher education institutions as they prepare students to address global challenges. While many frameworks and models exist to promote sustainability in higher education institutions, most focus on specific sustainability indicators, such as curriculum or policy, leaving the holistic teaching and learning dimension underexplored. This study aims to bridge the gap by identifying main indicators for integrating sustainability into higher education institutions and proposing a comprehensive green education model for teaching and learning. Through a comprehensive literature review of 61 publications from 2010 to 2024 and extracted for Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science, nine indicators were identified. From the identified indicators, six indicators – curriculum, stakeholders, mode of delivery, learning platform, sustainability teaching, and sustainable assessment and feedback - were selected to form the basis of the proposed model. The proposed model emphasizes on the interconnected processes, support structures, and outcomes to guide higher education institutions in incorporating sustainability into teaching and learning holistically. This model offers higher education institutions a practical tool to advance sustainable education and aligns with global sustainability goals.
