A Review Of Employee Voice Literature: Evolving Models And Modern Workplace

Abstract

Employee voice (EV) has become increasingly important in contemporary organizations due to evolving workplace structures, digital communication technologies, and hybrid work arrangements. This study reviews seven influential employee voice frameworks developed between 1970 and 2011 to examine the evolution of employee voice concepts and identify theoretical gaps relevant to modern organizational contexts. Drawing on documentary analysis of scholarly literature and publicly available practitioner commentaries, the study explores how different communication channels and forms influence employee manager interactions. The findings suggest that existing employee voice models primarily emphasize psychological and organizational factors while giving limited attention to the coexistence of formal and informal communication, as well as digital and face-to-face voice channels. Based on these insights, the study proposes a conceptual employee voice framework that integrates communication channels, communication forms, and contemporary workplace practices. The proposed framework contributes to employee voice literature by extending existing models to better reflect modern organizational environments and offers practical guidance for managers seeking to foster effective employee participation and organizational communication.
