Zakat And Poverty: An Integrated Study Of Systemic Literature Review And Bibliometrics
Abstract
Zakat functions as both a religious obligation and a socioeconomic mechanism in Islamic finance, facilitating wealth redistribution from the affluent to the disadvantaged (asnaf). This study investigates this dual role through an integrated Systematic Literature Review (SLR) and bibliometric analysis of 835 Scopus-indexed documents. Applying the PRISMA protocol, 47 qualifying studies were rigorously analyzed with 11 of which reached saturation. The findings delineate seven primary research clusters: Islamic finance frameworks, poverty reduction, distribution efficiency, empowerment programs, inequality mitigation, institutional collaboration, and ethical wealth management. The analysis confirms Zakat's significant impact on financial inclusion and poverty alleviation (evidenced by an h-index of 7-11), while also revealing critical research gaps in digital transformation, contextual effectiveness factors, and integration with national poverty strategies. This study contributes to the literature by proposing a three-fold policy framework: (1) implementing digitized zakat management systems, (2) adopting evidence-based program evaluation, and (3) conducting comparative analysis with conventional welfare instruments. These insights provide actionable pathways for policymakers and zakat institutions to enhance socioeconomic impact through innovative, data-driven redistribution strategies.
