Abstract
The Malaysian government recognises the importance and effectiveness of social enterprises, as they have proven to play a significant role in addressing socio-economic issues. Furthermore, the government now considers it essential for the social enterprises to maintain their sustainability to continue helping to tackle various socio-economic problems. However, this is not as straightforward as maintaining the sustainability of a commercial enterprise, as the social enterprises strive to achieve two missions simultaneously. While maintaining sustainability is important, there are, unfortunately, only limited studies exploring strategies necessary for sustaining these enterprises. Due to this challenge, this study aims to identify and explore the strategic elements present in established social enterprises in Malaysia. Using qualitative methods, such as in-depth interviews and document reviews, this study has found that there are three main elements essential for the sustainability strategy of the social enterprises, which are structured operation, visionary planning, and continuous improvement. Consequently, this study has concluded that it is essential for social enterprises to incorporate these elements into their strategies to ensure the sustainability of their organisations and the government to strategise for a competitive social-entrepreneurship ecosystem.
